Canon EOS M50 Review

October 14, 2019

Canon released the EOS M50 in early 2018. Last year I decided to pick up the M50 during one of the featured Black Friday deals. The camera was noteworthy for Canon as it was the company's first attempts to implement new technology into their camera bodies. Below is my longterm Canon EOS M50 Review.

Who this Product is For:

I think the EOS M50 is perfect as a travel camera. In addition to using it as a travel camera, the M50 also makes for a great entry-level vlogging camera.

Price:

Current prices for the EOS M50 can be viewed here. During the holidays there are usually good deals available for the m50s.

Additional Costs

The M50 is part of the Canon family but uses the EF-M mount instead of the EF mount common in most Canon cameras. If you're an existing Canon camera user, there is the EF-M Adapter that connects EF lenses to the EF-M mount.

What You Get

  • Compact Camera Body
  • 10.0 fps continuous shooting
  • 143 Focus Points
  • Digital video stabilization
  • Silent Shooting Scene Mode

A really great feature I love about the EOS M50 is how not only can you control the camera through your mobile device but also through the WiFi connection on your computer.

Cons:

  • Cropped 4k Video
  • Short Battery Life: 235 shots
  • Limited Ergonomics

When it comes to mirrorless cameras, Canon was pretty late to enter the game. The M50 was one of the first budget cameras from Canon to get 4k video. However, that came with a 1.7x crop to the 4k video which makes using the feature difficult.Another issue that I think Canon missed on was the design of the camera's body. Unlike other camera bodies, the M50 misses out on having dedicated buttons to control the IS0. There are ways around this by customizing some of the other buttons on the camera but it would have been great if they included an iso button and additional dial to control the shutter and aperture.

Summary: Canon EOS M50 Review

In conclusion, I think the Canon EOS M50 is an excellent choice for a vlogging or travel camera. If you're looking for an affordable entry-level camera on a budget, the EOS M50 is a great choice.

How to Stay Motivated as a Freelancer

October 7, 2019

Lack of motivation can happen often when you work for yourself. We exist in a world where work can become very busy to periods where we'll have a lull in projects. These are the days where it can be really difficult to stay motivated. Below are tips on how to stay motivated as a freelancer.

Redesign Your Work Environment

Rebooting your work environment is a good way to motivate yourself as a freelancer.

  • Clean Work Space
  • Rearrange Furniture
  • Binge watch Marie Kondo Netflix for Inspiration

As a freelancer, one of the benefits that you have is the ability to have a mobile work environment. Working outside of your home or in another area can be an additional jolt of inspiration for your motivation.

Create Lists

I use lists every day of the week. Lists are helpful in keeping track of tasks that may fall through the cracks when you're busy. Typical types of lists that I've created are:

  • Blog/Vlog Topics
  • Project Ideas
  • Side Projects
  • Short-Term Goals

Join a Community

Staying active and social can be very helpful to stay motivated when you're a freelancer. Also, joining a community of other freelancers/self-employed individuals can keep you on your freelancing game. It accomplishes in helping you to network and also growing your professional network. Linkedin and Meetup are great resources for finding and growing your network.

Structure Your Day in Breaks

Working for yourself can sometimes lead to burning the candle at both ends. Sometimes it can be difficult to not work long hours but it's important to remember to take breaks throughout the day. A popular method called Pomodoro is to take a break every 25 mins for 5 mins.

Summary: How to Stay Motivated as a Freelancer

In conclusion, working as a freelancer can be a difficult adjustment if you're used to working a 9 to 5 job. In addition to all these tips, make sure you're getting proper rest in order to have enough energy throughout the day.

What's in my Camera Bag for 2019

September 30, 2019

*Some of these are affiliate links that mean I’ll be compensated if you purchase the, so thanks for the support! It dawned on me that I've never posted about the photography gear that I normally use. Below is what's in my camera bag for 2019. I limited this post to being strictly about photography although most of these items can be used for video.

  • Canon EOS R
  • Mount Adapter EF-EOS R
  • EF 35mm f2.0
  • RF 24-105mm f4

EOS R

I was previously using the 5d Mark III but as it was an old camera, I decided to sell it and buy the EOS R. As the EOS R has an RF mount there aren't that many lenses available for the camera yet. Due to it being a newer camera, the EOS R offers a lot of new features such as:

  • 4k Video
  • Articulating Flip Screen
  • Silent Shutter
  • WiFi

The only drawbacks to the EOS R are that the 4k is cropped and there aren't enough lenses available for the RF Mount.

EF 35mm f2.0

The Canon 35mm f2.0 has been in my kit for a long time. I love lenses that have image stabilization as sometimes I will shoot video. 35mm feels like the perfect middle ground for a prime lens.

RF 24-105mm f4

Along with several prime lenses, I always try to keep a zoom lens on hand like the RF 24-105mm. Because I enjoy traveling and shooting events, having a zoom lens is extremely helpful in capturing photos in a new location. Also great when it comes to shooting video.

Accessories:

In addition to cameras and lenses, there are a few accessories that help during photoshoots such as flashes, tripods, etc. Below are a few that I use:

  • Manfrotto Tripod
  • Canon Flash

Summary: WHAT’S IN MY CAMERA BAG for 2019

In conclusion, I've been using these items for my photography kit and really enjoy using them. I recently photographed a sporting event earlier this month using a telephoto lens. I enjoyed the experience so much that I might add a telephoto lens to my kit. As I always enjoy looking into what other photographers are using in their kits, I hope you enjoyed these types of posts as I normally do.
