Canon EOS M50 Review

October 14, 2019

Canon released the EOS M50 in early 2018. Last year I decided to pick up the M50 during one of the featured Black Friday deals. The camera was noteworthy for Canon as it was the company's first attempts to implement new technology into their camera bodies. Below is my longterm Canon EOS M50 Review.

Who this Product is For:

I think the EOS M50 is perfect as a travel camera. In addition to using it as a travel camera, the M50 also makes for a great entry-level vlogging camera.

Price:

Current prices for the EOS M50 can be viewed here. During the holidays there are usually good deals available for the m50s.

Additional Costs

The M50 is part of the Canon family but uses the EF-M mount instead of the EF mount common in most Canon cameras. If you're an existing Canon camera user, there is the EF-M Adapter that connects EF lenses to the EF-M mount.

What You Get

  • Compact Camera Body
  • 10.0 fps continuous shooting
  • 143 Focus Points
  • Digital video stabilization
  • Silent Shooting Scene Mode

A really great feature I love about the EOS M50 is how not only can you control the camera through your mobile device but also through the WiFi connection on your computer.

Cons:

  • Cropped 4k Video
  • Short Battery Life: 235 shots
  • Limited Ergonomics

When it comes to mirrorless cameras, Canon was pretty late to enter the game. The M50 was one of the first budget cameras from Canon to get 4k video. However, that came with a 1.7x crop to the 4k video which makes using the feature difficult.Another issue that I think Canon missed on was the design of the camera's body. Unlike other camera bodies, the M50 misses out on having dedicated buttons to control the IS0. There are ways around this by customizing some of the other buttons on the camera but it would have been great if they included an iso button and additional dial to control the shutter and aperture.

Summary: Canon EOS M50 Review

In conclusion, I think the Canon EOS M50 is an excellent choice for a vlogging or travel camera. If you're looking for an affordable entry-level camera on a budget, the EOS M50 is a great choice.
