Talking-About-the-Canon-EOS-R.jpg

Talking About the Canon EOS R

October 1, 2018

In 2017 I wrote about how Canon could launch their first Full-Frame Mirrorless camera. On September 5th, Canon officially released their first mirrorless full frame camera, the Canon EOS R. We can expect this camera to be released on October 9th of this year.

Price:

The Canon EOS R has been listed at $2,299.00. This camera will certainly complete with the upcoming Nikon Z6 and current Sony A7 iii.

Additional Costs

If you're an existing Canon user there are some additional costs when switching to the Canon EOS R. Most noteworthy is the new lens mount that the Canon EOS R has which means new lenses to be used with this camera. However, you can use existing Canon EF lenses with an adapter.

What You Get

  • Fully Articulated Swivel Screen
  • Weather Sealed
  • Adapter can include ND Filter
  • Silent Shooting

Probably one of Canon's many strengths has been it's building cameras with swivel screens and they continue this in their EOS R.

What You Won’t Get

Here is a list of features that the Canon EOS R doesn't have:

  • Heavily cropped 4K
  • No In Body Image Stabilisation
  • High price point ($2,299.00)
  • New lens mount requires new lenses
  • Unsure reliability of auto focus with adapters
  • One SDcard slot

Due to the above features being missing, many feel that combined the EOS R is lacking in contrast to its main competitor, the Sony A7 iii. Sony is certainly the market leader when it comes to cameras. If Canon decides to price a product higher than it's existing competition but not match the feature set, it would come off as lacking.

Final Thoughts: Canon EOS R

In conclusion, I have mixed feelings regarding the Canon EOS R. Primarily due to the new mount that they implemented. Also, I feel one of Canon's biggest strengths is their lenses. Because they implemented a new mount, they can't take advantage of their existing EF Mount. Requiring existing users to buy an adapter seems like a barrier to entry. That being said, I would like to see more reviews come out on the Canon EOS R. I think there are more things that go into selecting a camera besides the spec sheet. Therefore, I'm looking forward to how the camera world responds hands-on testing of this new camera.

Canon 80D Review

September 10, 2018

[sc name="affiliate disclosure"]Lately, I have been missing the benefits of cameras that have a fully articulated screen. Because the 80D has been out for some time, I decided to rent and test it out. The Canon 80D was released in early 2016 and replaced the outgoing 70D. Hence, below is my Canon 80D Review.

Who this Product is For:

The Canon 80D is a mid-range DSLR that I think is best suited for experienced users. It is the next step before moving to a professional full-frame camera, such as the 5D series.

Price:

At the time of this writing, the Canon 80D falls under $1000. However, because Canon is planning on releasing their full-frame mirrorless camera, expect this price to drop. Click here to view the latest prices for Canon 80D.

Sample Photos:

[gallery ids="3453,3447,3449"]

Video Sample:

I was using a 24mm f2.8 lens that didn't have image stabilization. Because the 80D doesn't have in body stabilization and I was shooting video handheld the footage came out very shaky.

What You Get

Here are a few features that you get with the 80D:

  • 7.0 fps
  • 24 Mega Pixel APS-C Sensor
  • Weather Sealed Camera Body

Canon's strengths lie in its autofocus both for video and for photography. The fully articulating screen is helpful when trying to capture shots at extreme angles.

What You Won’t Get

I think the Canon 80D does have a few shortcomings compared to its competitors, the Nikon D7500 and Sony A6500. While the Sony A6500 and Nikon D7500 has 4k Video, the Canon 80D is limited at 1080p.Also, if you're planning on doing slow-motion for your videos you will need to do that using video editing software in post-production. Finally, the last negative is that both of the 80D competitors, the A6500 and D7500 both have in body stabilization, making them better cameras for video.

Summary: Canon 80D Review

In conclusion, if you are looking for a rugged camera body with an articulating screen and great autofocus, the 80D is a solid choice. If some of your projects require handheld movement you may want to look at the competitors. However, if you're on a budget, you might find some good deals available as Canon has finally released its full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R.

Siteground Web Hosting Review

August 27, 2018

Similar to my previous Review of Bluehost Web Hosting, I want to do more reviews of web hosting services. As I have been using Siteground for close to a year, I felt now was a good time to review the service. The SiteGround company is a hosting company that is based in Bulgaria but has datacenters all over the world. Below is my Siteground Web Hosting Review.

Who this Product is For:

Perhaps you have a Facebook Business or Social Media you are using to run your business. Or you might use a service such as Squarespace or Wix has a platform to host your website. As your business grows you may want something that has features that these platforms do not offer.Hosting your own website is a lot similar to hosting on Facebook Business or Squarespace only you have a lot more control over the look and feel of your site. Siteground's customer base includes developers, marketers, and other small business professionals. Also, Siteground is highly compatible with WordPress. A bonus if you're already familiar with using WordPress as a site and blogging option.

Price & Length

Siteground offers three web hosting plans to choose from Startup, Grow Big, GoGeek. Outside of traditional web hosting, the company offers cloud hosting and enterprise hosting options. As with most web hosting plans, I would always choose the monthly plan to fully evaluate the service.

Additional Costs

As with most web hosting services, if you do not have a domain name you will need to purchase one. Siteground also offers a free "Let's Encrypt SSLs" certificate which must be renewed every three months. Siteground does offer a yearly SSL Certificate that cost around $99 at this time.

What You Get

The following features included in the basic plan are:

  • Free Website Builder
  • cPanel & SSH Access
  • Free CMS Install
  • 24/7 Technical Support
  • SSD Storage
  • Free Auto Daily Backups
  • Unlimited Email Accounts & DBs
  • HTTP/2 Enabled Servers
  • Free Let's Encrypt SSLs
  • Free Cloudflare CDN
  • GDPR compliant

However, I think Siteground's strongest area is providing a reliable hosting service with relatively little downtime.

What You Won’t Get

A major issue that I had when using SiteGround was with it's Free Let's Encrypt SSLs. Siteground offers a free wildcard SSL certificate for your hosting. However, the free certificate must be renewed every three months. The SSL renewal tool had difficulty renewing the SSL when it expired. I needed to contact customer service in order to properly renew the SSL.Because of this, I'm a bit skeptical when it comes to using Siteground's Free SSL to manage an e-commerce site. I think it makes more sense to pay for their separate SSL certificate which renews yearly instead of every three months.Visitor Limitations:Another issue that many have reported regarding SiteGround is their monthly visitor limitations. Depending on the plan you select, if your website attracts over a certain number of visitors, Siteground will begin to slow down your website. For instance, if you're on the StartUp plan, and you attract 400-500 visitors a day, your website will begin to slow down due to the plan limiting to 10,000 monthly visitors.

Summary: Siteground Web Hosting Review

In conclusion, I found Siteground to be a major upgrade compared to Bluehost. I found that my website was stable and held up to incoming traffic. While SiteGround is a much better hosting service than Bluehost, the service needs some improvement. Having to renew an SSL cert every three months has been frustrating. Especially when you do not receive notifications on when your certificate is expiring. In general, I think Siteground is fine if you're starting out with a budget. However, I would find it hard to recommend if you have a website with high numbers of traffic and users. Finally, I would like to say thank you for reading this article. I hope you found it informative and helpful regarding SiteGround as a hosting platform.

Nikon's Two Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

August 23, 2018

Over the past several weeks there have been rumors about Nikon releasing their first full-frame Mirrorless Camera. Today, Nikon Introduced Two Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras, the Z6 and Z7. Additionally, as the cameras have a new mount, Nikon will offer new lenses to use with the Z6 and Z7. Dpreview has published a video about Nikon's Two Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrWv6D3v95g&t=0s

Z6 & Z7

Nikon's two Mirrorless Cameras will be called the Z6 and the Z7. The Z6 appears to be Nikon's entry-level choice priced at $1995. The Z7, is the higher end of the two cameras priced at $3400. Based on the photos that were released, I found that these new cameras slightly resemble the Sony A7 line of cameras in appearance. The only exception is that the Z6 and Z7 have a bigger grip and are weather sealed.

Features to Be Excited For:

Among a few of the features coming to these cameras are:

  • 4K Video
  • Image Stabiliazation
  • Silent Shooting

While these are great features, one feature I wish these cameras included was a dual card slot. Because there is a risk of a memory card failing in the field, having dual card slots help in preventing a complete loss of your footage. I do wonder why Nikon choose to omit this feature as they have it in the D850 and D500.

Adapter for Existing Lenses

As the new Mirrorless cameras will have a new mount, new lenses will be needed. However, Nikon has released an adapter for existing lenses to be used with these new cameras.

Summary: Nikon's Two Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

In conclusion, I am very excited about these two cameras. Sony has been dominating the camera world for some time now. It is really interesting to see Nikon now introduce new products to compete with Sony. I would have like to see a fully articulated screen. With this release, I'm expecting Canon and Sony to release a camera to compete with Nikon's new offering. The Nikon Z7 is expected to go on sale the end of September while the Z6 will be released in November.
