Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8L Review

April 15, 2020

I had been wanting to shoot with a short telephoto for a long time now. I normally use prime lenses, but as I wanted to shoot more pets, I needed a lens that would capture a dog’s impulsiveness. As I currently own an EOS R, I decided to rent the Canon RF 24-70mm to try it on one of my photoshoots. After using the lens for a week I decided to review the RF 24-70mm below.

Price:

The Canon RF 24-70mm f2.8 is currently priced around $2299. Canon released several RF lenses around October of 2019. The 24-70 is considered the holy grail among lenses such as:

  • Canon RF 15-35mm f2.8

  • Canon RF 70-200mm f2.8

All of these lenses because of their quality have been priced above $2,000. I’m hoping that further down the road third party lens manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron will build similar lenses that use the RF Mount. Third-party manufacturers tend to be more affordable however you can still use EF lenses with an adapter for EOS R cameras. .

What You Get:

  • Image Stabilization

  • 2.8 Fast Aperature.

What You Won’t Get:

  • RF Mount is only available for Canon EOS R cameras.

  • The lens is a heavy and large lens.

Because it’s a heavy lens it may be difficult to mount on a gimbal, so this might make it difficult if you want some more stabilization for your videos. However, there are bigger gimbals that can handle the weight of the 24-70mm f2.8.

Summary: CANON RF 24-70MM F2.8L REVIEW

In conclusion, I really enjoyed using the RF 24-70mm lens. I think it may work better for portraits and video work. The lens is expensive but because it is such a quality lens, it’ll last for several years. However, most 24-70mm of the f/2.8 of other brands are priced around this range. Canon makes some really impressive lenses and the 24-70mm will definitely end up in a lot of photographers’ camera bags.
