Canon 77D Review

April 30, 2018

[sc name="affiliate disclosure"]I sometimes wonder what are good beginner DSLRs for someone starting out in photography. Canon offers many options for the camera hobbyist and professionals. One of Canon's recently released cameras slotted for beginners/novices is the Canon 77D. The 77D came out in early 2017. Below is my Canon 77D Review.

Sample Photos

[gallery columns="4" ids="2148,2149,2150,2151"]

Who this Product is For

The Canon 77D is a camera that fits between an entry-level (Canon T6i / Canon T7i) and a mid-level camera (Canon 80D). Unlike the 5D Mark III from my previous review, the 77D is targeted towards camera hobbyists & enthusiasts. Unlike the entry level Rebel cameras from Canon, the 77D has an lcd on the top of the camera that quickly displays your settings, similar to the 80D.Canon 77D with 24-105mm

Price

At the time of this writing the Canon 77D is priced at $899.00. The body of the 77D is light and weighs 540g and is slightly larger than a mirrorless camera. A notible competitor to the 77D is the Nikon D5600 that is 75g lighter.

What You Get

  • 24MP - APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • ISO 100 - 25600 ( expands to 51200)
  • 3" Fully Articulated Screen
  • 6.0 fps continuous shooting
  • 1920 x 1080 video resolution
  • Intervalometer
  • Built-in Wireless
  • Weght: 540g.
  • Battery Life: 600 shots

Autofocus remains one of the outstanding strengths of Canon cameras. I found the autofocus picked up focus remarkably fast. Another strength is the articulating screen. This flip out screen may make the 77D a great option to do simple vlogging.

What You Won’t Get

With its product lineup, Canon tends to reserves some of it's more advanced technology like 4k recording for its higher-end cameras. In comparison, a similarly priced camera from Sony such as the Sony a6300 comes with 4k recording. The Sony a6300 offers a lot more features such as the option for silent shooting and being smaller & lighter. This may be unfair to compare a DSLR to a mirrorless camera but I feel in terms of price, people may opt for the mirrorless option.

Summary: Canon 77D Review

I think the Canon 77D is a good camera for someone that is already invested in the Canon system and has Canon lenses. When choosing a camera it's always good to look at how this camera will assist you as a photographer or videographer. In my opinion the 77D is a good option if you want a lighter camera to travel with more midrange features.[tg_divider style="normal"]

Design Gear Used More Than Ten Years Ago

April 23, 2018

While digging through some old things I came across this Computer Arts Magazine from December 2005. Computer Arts Magazine is a UK Magazine for 3D, Motion, Print and Web Designers. In 2005, Facebook and Instagram had yet to be created, Youtube was just beginning, and everyone used cell phones for phone calls. Also in this year, both laptops and digital cameras were still very new and not as affordable as they are now. To look back and compare the differences today has been very interesting. Here is some of the design gear used more than ten years ago:

  • Adobe Creative Suite 2: Then: $1299-$999, Now: $50/mo.
  • Canon Rebel XT(350D)- Then: $800, Now: $169
  • Nikon D50- Then: $700, Now: $188
  • Ibook G4 12'- Then: $999, Now: $99
  • Power Book G4 17'- Then: $2600, Now: $160

Digital Cameras

Digital cameras have probably seen the most change in the last ten years. Entry level cameras like the Canon Rebel XT and Nikon D50 were not capable of doing video. Now, video recording is expected in all cameras. Even in mobile phones, consumers want the option to be able to record video from their devices. Looking at both the D50 and Rebel XT featured in this magazine, digital cameras experienced a decreased of around 87-70%.

Laptops

Apple computers have always been very popular in the creative field. One argument has to do with some design software running faster. Another reason is that things visually render better on Apple devices. However, the apple laptops featured on this list received the greatest price decrease, falling around 90%. The tendency to upgrade laptops is usually around three to four years so this type of deprecation makes sense for these devices.

Software

In terms of Software, Adobe Creative Suite still reigns supreme for designers and creatives. In 2005, the Creative Suite was available for purchase but nowadays Adobe has since been moved to a subscription platform for its software. Final cut Express still remains as a top video editing software.

Summary: Design Gear Used More Than Ten Years Ago

In conclusion, it is interesting to see how technology has changed in the past ten years. We truly live in a remarkable time of technology. I think one thing I've realized is how fast deprecation in technology can happen. With this deprecation in mind, I think buying used may be the best option when buying gear for your field.
